God’s precious oil

John Brown, a born-again Texas Christian and reformed alcoholic, acknowledges no doubts. He believes in the literal truth of every word in the Holy Scriptures — and in the power of his faith to find oil in Israel, where so many have failed over the past 60 years.
He has his texts to prove it. The mission statement of his company, Zion Oil and Gas, draws on Deuteronomy 32:13, in which Moses tells the Israelites that the Lord made Jacob “ride on the high places of the Earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock”.
Cynical Israelis have heard it all before. When you mention Brown’s vision, they snigger: “They always have a text.” They suggest that the Hebrew word “shemen” means olive oil rather than petroleum.
But Brown has found experts who disagree, and his “Ma’anit” site, at Megiddo, in the coastal plain between Netanya and Haifa, is being taken more seriously than most.
Zion Oil has recruited a professional team of geologists and engineers, led by Glen Perry, a hard-headed Texas oil man with an Israeli wife.
Richard Rinberg, a former London accountant and venture capitalist who moved to Ra’anana in 1996, serves as chief executive.
Perry confides that he had to be convinced. Rinberg, a modern-Orthodox Jew huddling in a JNF-UK car-rally jacket, admits that what they are calling “the Joseph Project” remains a high-risk venture.
Nonetheless, Zion Oil has raised $25 million from 5,900 investors since it was launched on the New York Stock Exchange this spring. Many of them are American Bible-belt Christians, but an Orthodox Jew put in $1 million.
“The market,” Rinberg claims in Zion Oil’s modest offices on the Caesarea industrial park, “believes our project has something going for it.”
Two years ago, a first well drilled down to 15,800 ft and yielded credible signs of oil and gas. “Our science is confirming John Brown’s faith,” Perry contends. “I’ve no problem with faith, but you’ve got to have confirming circumstances or events. That’s what we, as a scientific team, do.”
They drilled through one zone where they recovered 40 to 50 barrels of oil. Other zones showed traces of gas heavier than methane, as well as pieces of asphalt that laboratory tests found contained light oil.
John Brown’s single-minded quest began in 1981. His marriage was falling apart. He had been in and out of alcohol rehabilitation four times. His machine-tool business was in trouble.
“I had a born-again experience,” he recalls over the phone from his Dallas headquarters. “Even though I had practised Christianity, I had never made a profession of faith or accepted Jesus as my personal saviour. I had a transformation that just overwhelmed me because I had never felt such a presence of God in my life.” A few months later, James Spillman, a charismatic evangelist, preached at Brown’s church. He cited Moses talking about oil in the Promised Land.
“I accepted it,” says Brown, who celebrated his 68th birthday this month. “I thought that if the Bible says it, then I believe it. I look at the Bible as being true. I don’t even look at it any other way.”
He visited Israel for the first time in 1983. The visit proved a second epiphany.
“At that point, I had never been involved with the Jewish people or with Israel. But as soon as I got off the plane, I had this great sense of belonging, of knowing that the Jewish people were God’s special people and the land called Israel was God’s special land. I felt it was like going home. I felt a love of the land, a love of the people. I knew in my heart that I was going to do something in Israel.”
In Jerusalem he put his hands on the Western Wall and prayed for oil for Israel.
“I was not in the oil business,” he admits, “but I knew Israel needed energy. I prayed for oil, and I know in my heart that there is no doubt that the prayer was answered at that moment. I knew for sure that it was my purpose and destiny to come and help. I was determined that one day I would go to Israel and discover oil or be involved in the process of finding oil.”
Back in the United States, he sold his business interests.
“I had this consuming fire in my heart. I took all my money that I’d saved and I started an oil company that some day would find oil by faith in Israel. Most of the people I knew thought I was crazy, especially the Christians. They didn’t understand this calling in my life.”
At the same time, he started to study Judaism. “I went to synagogue, I went to Jewish community centres, any place I could go to read about it. I had no idea the doctrines and traditions of Judaism were so rich.”
Brown’s next task was to decide where to drill. Again, the Bible pointed the way. Other times, other texts. On his deathbed, Jacob promised Joseph “the blessings of the deep that lieth under” (Genesis 49:25). Before dying, Moses blessed the tribes of Joseph for “the chief things of the ancient mountains” and “the precious things of lasting hills” and promised that Asher would “dip his foot in oil” (Deuteronomy 33).
For a man of faith, that was enough. The tribes of Joseph are Manasseh and Ephraim (his two sons). Manasseh’s lands stretched north of Jaffa between the Mediterranean and the Jordan. Immediately above it were the lands of Asher, whose “foot” poked into Manasseh.
Brown homed in on Megiddo, which Christians believe is Armageddon, the field of the final battle between God and Satan.
But it was not all theology. Brown was, after all, a businessman before he was born again. Ma’anit was not an unknown site. An Israeli named Yossi Langotsky had drilled there before, but abandoned the concession when he ran out of money.
“An oil company had identified it as one of the potential prospects in the country as early as 1981,” says Perry, Brown’s chief engineer.
“John had a friend from Texas who was an Israeli geologist who had told him about this area. The site that John saw biblically was within 200 yards of where Yossi Langotsky drilled his well.” Zion Oil reopened Langotsky’s well, which had been drilled to 7,600 ft, and went down another 8,200 ft. Despite the promising signs, however, the company sealed the well this spring.
“There were zones that have a lot of water,” Perry explains.
“We never could get a hermetic seal between the zones we thought were productive and the water zones. We decided to drill a second well. Now that we know what the problem is, we can deal with it. The second well is designed to isolate the oil from the water.”
They expect to start drilling next June, going down 2,500 ft deeper than Ma’anit. The geologists detect signs of oil and gas.
“We have high hopes of the prospect,” Perry says, “or we wouldn’t be pursuing it. If we’re successful, there would be significant quantities. It would be commercially viable.”
John Brown is certain. Israelis can only pray.

Shopping for Outrage: the government needs another 9/11

I had to be out and about this past weekend, rather than at my desk, due to family obligations, and not due to any involvement in the ho-ho-ho "Sanny Claws" commerce.
I don't know how it is where you live, but in the Coeur d'Alene, ID/Spokane, WA area, the people were out spending, but doing so joylessly. It was so rote and mechanical it was spooky. The Stepford Shoppers prowled the aisles as they were told, but joy to the world, conviviality, Christ? These were nowhere to be found. Instead, minimum-wage store clerks stressed out by not being able to afford to drive their gas-guzzling clunkers to work, waited on harried and haughty shoppers. Deck the halls with boughs of folly!
I assume it's better in Europe, even though they are mostly agnostics over there; still, the roots of the holy day ("holiday") run deep in the Old World and have more of an association with the root than the register; Europeans celebrate at this darkest astronomical season and they do so in quaint and lovely ways, from the nativity displays of Italy to the festive lighting of the Nordic countries.
Here in the Pacific Northwest however, it's a mostly grim, going-through-the-motions affair. The psychological state of the masses seems to be one of mild to acute depression. It's like they don't have a fighting spirit. They are being robbed and they don't seem to think they can do anything about it. Resignation reigns, and with it, despair.
Partly this is due, methinks, to an unspoken popular sense, not quite a conscious realization or outright affirmation, that the U.S. government was behind 9/11. Not only that, but also a sense that all indicators are that the government can only radically increase its power with yet another government-approved terror attack on U.S. soil.
Columnist Stu Bykofsky of the Philadelphia Daily News said it openly earlier this year, "To save America, we need another 9/11." David Addington, one of Vice President Dick Cheney's aides, is reported to have stated, with regard to the "FISA" court which oversees executive wiretapping, "We're only one bomb away from getting rid of that obnoxious court."
It's hardly a secret that the government needs another 9/11, or that the Bush administration was behind the first one; and since these dreadful facts are indeed known, if only at some sub-cellar level of the Group Mind of the American people, that's a terrible psychological burden to carry and goes a long way toward explaining the apathy and exhaustion we are witnessing, or that this writer observed anyway, here in the inland Northwest.
But it's more than apathy.
The American people are wounded, and therefore to a certain extent, incapacitated. We see this even here, among the readers of On the Contrary. On Saturday we broke the story on an otherwise obscure squib that appeared in New York City's "Forward" newspaper, confirming what your editor has been saying for years, that "Catholic conservative" super-hero, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, has been engaged in a sustained campaign of actively assisting in the promotion of Talmudic law clerks and lawyers at the highest levels of the American judiciary.
After we reported this outrage on Nov. 24, it should have been passed around and reprinted in some significant corners of the Internet. But it wasn't. To my knowledge, it was published only on our own blog, and that of Maurice Pinay: http://mauricepinay.blogspot.com/2007/11/disabuse-yourself-of-disinformation.html.
That was the sum total of the "publicity" for this shattering insight into the double-mind of the paleo-conservative right wing and the character of one of its most revered icons. But if we have been adulating one of our executioners, isn't that newsworthy, and shouldn't it be halted, by shining the light of exposure on it? A crucial revelation like this is empowering, if it is publicized. It liberates those who have been fooled by one of the cruelest cons ever perpetrated inside the bowels of our own movement. After all, Scalia is "one of us" isn't he?
But so far, the story has gone almost nowhere. Is this information only passed around when it appears in Pat Buchanan's column? If that's the case, then let me clue you in on a little secret: it never will be, due to the unfortunate fact that Mr. Buchanan is one of the main props of Justice Scalia's personality cult.
This is the Internet, and as Ron Paul's vibrant movement has shown, Paul's supporters have built him an impressive base online, through grassroots efforts. Dr. Paul confesses to knowing little about the web. So it was done for him, by self-motivating initiative.
Will this populist, Ron Paul-style energy branch out into other issues and endeavors? If it doesn't, then Dr. Paul can't make it. His movement alone cannot reanimate a corpse. Paul's momentum and offensive must serve as a candle of inspiration that motivates others to work on issues Dr. Paul can't tackle right now, precisely like what we are addressing here, a story which should snowball into a hugely embarrassing controversy for Scalia.
Is Justice Scalia going to be allowed to get away with this, without any questions being asked in public, and without his admirers being made aware that their support for him puts our nation on the road to the implementation of the Talmudic "Noahide Laws"? If so, that's quite a test of our apathy, isn't it? Is that why the Cryptocracy had the "Forward" float the story in the first place, to measure the depth of our outrage?

Court watchers say you can count on one hand the number of Orthodox Jews who have served as clerks, but that figure will see a significant jump in 2008, when Harvard Law graduates Moshe Spinowitz, 28, and Yaakov Roth, 23, join the staff of Associate Justice Antonin Scalia.
“I think it’s sort of a coincidence. Things just sort of worked out that way this year, but it is 20% of a minyan,” Roth said, speaking to the Forward about the lawyers’ good fortune.
In interviews with the Forward, both Roth and Spinowitz said they believed that their faith was something of a footnote to the arduous selection process and had been unremarkable both at Harvard Law and at their current clerkships for U.S. Court of Appeals judge Michael Boudin, where the two now sit in neighboring cubicles.
...Despite Orthodox Jews’ tiny numbers, their experience at the Supreme Court has been one small but telling barometer of the place of Jews within the broader society.
Nathan Lewin, a prominent Washington lawyer who graduated from Harvard Law School in 1960 and went on to clerk for Associate Justice John M. Harlan from 1961 to 1962, recalled being pleasantly surprised when Harlan said at his initial interview that a Saturday Sabbath observance would not be a problem.
During his tenure at Harvard, Lewin said, classes were held Saturdays, leading the handful of Orthodox male students to rush through their morning services — only to arrive at lectures without their books or pens. When exam time rolled around, the men paid for their own proctors to administer Saturday evening exams. And when recruiting season came, several law firms told Lewin that they would not hire an associate who refused to work Saturdays.
At the same time, Lewin recalled a fellow classmate and colleague on the Harvard Law Review who was impressed by his Jewish background: the Italian Catholic, staunchly conservative Scalia.
“He has commented at times on the fact that he thought that people who had a talmudic training had a head start,” Lewin said of Scalia. The two were “quite friendly” during their law school days, said Lewin, and last met socially at a kosher restaurant in Washington. (End quote from The Forward)
HOFFMAN'S NOTE: Justice Scalia's close Talmudic pal, Nathan Lewin, is the attorney for AgriProcessors, allegedly one of the worst and most inhumane kosher slaughterhouses in the nation. Lewin is on record as advocating that the family members of Palestinian suicide bombers--their parents for example--should be executed. For several years he and Scalia have been attempting to establish a yeshiva (Talmud school) for US judges.

Court watchers say you can count on one hand the number of Orthodox Jews who have served as clerks, but that figure will see a significant jump in 2008, when Harvard Law graduates Moshe Spinowitz, 28, and Yaakov Roth, 23, join the staff of Associate Justice Antonin Scalia.
“I think it’s sort of a coincidence. Things just sort of worked out that way this year, but it is 20% of a minyan,” Roth said, speaking to the Forward about the lawyers’ good fortune.
In interviews with the Forward, both Roth and Spinowitz said they believed that their faith was something of a footnote to the arduous selection process and had been unremarkable both at Harvard Law and at their current clerkships for U.S. Court of Appeals judge Michael Boudin, where the two now sit in neighboring cubicles.
...Despite Orthodox Jews’ tiny numbers, their experience at the Supreme Court has been one small but telling barometer of the place of Jews within the broader society.
Nathan Lewin, a prominent Washington lawyer who graduated from Harvard Law School in 1960 and went on to clerk for Associate Justice John M. Harlan from 1961 to 1962, recalled being pleasantly surprised when Harlan said at his initial interview that a Saturday Sabbath observance would not be a problem.
During his tenure at Harvard, Lewin said, classes were held Saturdays, leading the handful of Orthodox male students to rush through their morning services — only to arrive at lectures without their books or pens. When exam time rolled around, the men paid for their own proctors to administer Saturday evening exams. And when recruiting season came, several law firms told Lewin that they would not hire an associate who refused to work Saturdays.
At the same time, Lewin recalled a fellow classmate and colleague on the Harvard Law Review who was impressed by his Jewish background: the Italian Catholic, staunchly conservative Scalia.
“He has commented at times on the fact that he thought that people who had a talmudic training had a head start,” Lewin said of Scalia. The two were “quite friendly” during their law school days, said Lewin, and last met socially at a kosher restaurant in Washington. (End quote from The Forward)
HOFFMAN'S NOTE: Justice Scalia's close Talmudic pal, Nathan Lewin, is the attorney for AgriProcessors, allegedly one of the worst and most inhumane kosher slaughterhouses in the nation. For several years he and Scalia have been attempting to establish a yeshiva (Talmud school) for US judges.

Why Feinstein and Schumer support Mukasey
Brief background note on Bush's attorney general nominee and why Feinstein and Schumer support him:

Pakistan: The Great Game's Terror Laboratory

I have to laugh at how the establishment media played along for the last few days with the scripted response of "strong protests by the Bush administration to the imposition of a dictatorship by General Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan." You can be certain that Condi and Dubya approved that very thing in advance with the understanding that in its wake there would be a theatrical condemnation of it for the benefit of, well, the media. Who else would believe that George W. Bush and Condoleezza Rice care about human rights or a Constitution in Pakistan or anywhere else?
The evidence for my cynical view comes in this morning's New York Times, "US Likely to Continue Aid to Pakistan":
The Bush administration signaled Sunday that it would probably keep billions of dollars flowing to Pakistan's military, despite the detention of human rights advocates and leaders of the political opposition...Speaking to reporters in Jerusalem, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that while the United States would "have to review the situation with aid," she said three times that President Bush's first concern was "to protect America and protect American citizens by continuing to fight against terrorists." "That means we have to be very cognizant of the counterterrorism operations that we are involved in," she said. "We have to be very cognizant of the fact that some of the assistance that has been going to Pakistan is directly related to the counterterrorism mission."

And we, Secretary Rice, are "cognizant" of the fact that your boss is just itching to offer the same alibi about "fighting terrorists" and "counterterrorism" if and when he can manage to suspend the US Constitution.
Moreover, as many of us are aware, Bush and his crooked dictator-allies are fomenting and spreading the growth of terrorism by removing from the moderate Pakistani reformist middle classes and judiciary (which is independent of Islamic sharia law) all hope of democratic change. Instead, in the name of the old, familiar "terrorism" bogeyman, Musharraf is giving the people no peaceful, reasonable alternative to his rotten dictatorship other than a radical one, and in Pakistan that radicalism is Sunni fundamentalist Islam. Pakistan is a laboratory for growing it and you have to wonder whether in this scenescape of the British Secret Service's storied "Great Game," it isn't planned that way by the dynastic old money ruling class in the US.
They will have difficulty getting the US Constitution suspended if terrorism subsides overseas. Pakistan would seem to be the site of one of their many Frankenstein laboratory experiments toward this end, increasing the resistance by indigenous forces who are then labeled "terrorists" by Jerusalem and the State Department (what a "coincidence" that Rice announced that everything was cool, money-wise, between Bush and Musharraf, from the world capital of state terrorism).

How the NY Times Hides Rabbinic Crimes Against Women

The NY Times hides rabbinic crimes against women by burying them, even as the least peccadillo committed by Iran get its own headline story, as in the Nov. 1 issue in which Iran's having left several modern master paintings by western artists like Pollock and Warhol in a basement merited a separate headlined story intended to once again showcase how Neanderthal those Iranians are.
But what about Neanderthal Orthodox rabbis?
The account of five Orthodox Judaic morality policemen beating a woman on an Israeli bus got buried in a Nov. 2 NY Times report about the "kosher economy," -- rabbi-approved cell phones and dissident pizzerias. The report was headlined, "A Modern Marketplace for Israel's Ultra-Orthodox." (See:

Buried deep in the article on "ultra-Orthodox shopping patterns" is a lone paragraph, marooned between reporter Steven Erlanger's citation of credit cards, DVDs, software and "Costco-size packages of...cornflakes (and)...diapers":
"On Oct. 21, five ultra-Orthodox Jews assaulted a woman and an Israeli soldier on a bus bound for Beit Shemesh. The men demanded that the woman sit in the back of the bus; when she refused and asked the soldier to sit next to her, they beat them both. When the police came, dozens of ultra-Orthodox men attacked them while the assailants escaped."
The Times must think that we too are of the cornflakes and diapers set and that we won't notice that this horrific account of the true nature of Taliban-like Orthodox Judaism has been buried in a NY Times consumer report ostensibly about the Israeli marketplace.
Furthermore, it took the Times twelve days to report the egregious attack on the woman on the bus. If the attack had been perpetrated by Iranian Revolutionary Guards or Saudi Wahabist purity police, it would surely have merited a NY Times headline, its own separate story and perhaps even a front page position and a follow-up in the form of a long, scathing essay in the Sunday Times magazine.
Nope. There's none of that in the case of the rabbis beating a lady on an Israeli bus. The Times had to find a way to treat this case with Orwellian finesse while being able to say that they did in fact report it (however reluctantly and minimally). So they gave it needle-in-a-haystack status.
Double standards like this can drive people crazy. Having to read the Times' incessant, hectoring, holier-than-thou editorials and reporting about Muslim male chauvinism, and then see how the NY Times covers up the virulent Judaic strain of misogyny, is just infuriating.
But that's life in a Zionist-nationalist oriented media "democracy."
Meanwhile, don't let Vladimir Putin dare to control the Russian media on behalf of a nationalist Russian agenda. His moves in that direction are abominable, according to the NY Times drumbeat, while their own terrible power to distort, censor, omit and minimize proceeds apace, powered by the unquestioned sense of entitlement for which the New York elite are notorious.

Nope. There's none of that in the case of the rabbis beating a lady on an Israeli bus. The Times had to find a way to treat this case with Orwellian finesse while being able to say that they did in fact report it (however reluctantly and minimally). So they gave it needle-in-a-haystack status.
Double standards like this can drive people crazy. Having to read the Times' incessant, hectoring, holier-than-thou editorials and reporting about Muslim male chauvinism, and then see how the NY Times covers up the virulent Judaic strain of misogyny, is just infuriating.

Books published by the Saudi government that promote the notorious forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and other anti-Jewish views have been found at a Muslim school in London.
Texts from the King Fahad Academy in Acton, West London — an independent school with 470 pupils aged from 3 to 18, which is supported by the Saudi embassy — describe the Protocols’ conspiracy theories as “indisputable truth” and accuse Jews of “trying to immerse nations in vice”.
They are examples of antisemitic propaganda cited in a 200-page survey of extremist literature in Muslim institutions in Britain by Policy Exchange, a centre-right think tank. Its report was released during this week’s state visit here by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.
One Arabic book found at the academy, "Prophetic Tradition and Islamic Culture" — which was published by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Education, Learning and Educational Advancement in 2005-6 — claims the Protocols to be an authentic text revealing details of Zionist plans to “exclusively rule the world”, control the media and corrupt Europe.
A second book issued by the ministry refers to Jews as “a people who were moulded with treachery and backstabbing throughout the centuries”.
The report’s author, Denis MacEoin, of Newcastle University, said it was “appalling” for children to be exposed to works endorsing The Protocols. Dr Mac-Eoin demanded that importers of antisemitic literature be “brought to book”.
But the academy’s principal, Sumaya Alyusuf, told the JC that the Saudi-published books were part of an old curriculum and had not been taught for three years. It was implementing a curriculum that “aims to promote interfaith dialogue and understanding”, she said. Textbooks “do not contain any antisemitic material” or anything “offensive to other faiths”.
Earlier this year, a former teacher accused the school of having used books that referred to Jews and Christians as “pigs” and “monkeys”.
Other instances of antisemitic literature found by Policy Exchange include a collection in English of rulings by Saudi scholars — available from the London Central Mosque, in Regents Park, and the East London Mosque — which contain claims that Freemasonry is a secret Zionist-controlled organisation intent on destroying other religions.
Another book in Arabic, advancing the theory that Jews and Freemasons are behind plots to corrupt Muslim women, was published by the Office of Da’wah in Britain, in central London.
The report, entitled "The Hijacking of British Islam," found extremist literature promoting “abhorrence for non-believers” in a quarter of the 100 venues visited by its Muslim research team during 2006/7. Worryingly, it said, these included some of the UK’s “best-funded and most dynamic” Muslim organisations. It accused Saudi Arabia of “a powerful and malign” influence in spreading the sectarian Wahhabi interpretation of Islam in Britain.
Mark Gardner, communications director of the Community Security Trust, backed the report, saying that the trust had “long warned of the dangers posed by radical elements within Islam”.
He added: “In recent decades Wahhabist ideology and financial muscle has become increasingly influential beyond its traditional Middle Eastern heartland. It pushes a simplistic ‘us versus them’ world view that is typified by its antisemitism.”
The Saudi embassy was unable to find a spokesman. But Muhammad Abdul Bari, secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, condemned the report as “shrill hysteria".

The Future of Solar-Powered Homes

This weekend, at a few minutes past 9 a.m. EST, "CBS News
Sunday Morning" will broadcast my report on this year's
Solar Decathlon. (This show's stories often get rescheduled
at the last moment, but so far it's looking good for
Sunday.)
Anyway--yes, I know. The Solar what?
It's a competition, now held every other year (this was the
third Decathlon since 2002). It's produced by the
Department of Energy as a showcase for the latest high-tech
solar homes--designed and built by college students.
The universities' engineering and architecture students
begin working one or two years in advance to design a
completely self-powered home. This year, there were 38
entries, mostly from the United States and Europe.
The top 20 teams got a unique invitation: to transport the
houses, by truck or ship, piece by piece, from their
schools to the Mall in Washington, D.C., the strip between
the Washington Monument and the Capitol. The Energy
Department gives each finalist team $100,000 to defray the
transportation costs, although that's a drop in the bucket
compared to the total amount some of these teams spent on
their homes: up to $1 million, usually from donations and
alumni.
There they were, last month: 20 houses, reassembled, arrayed
in a little solar village, fully operational and open to
the public. (You can see a lot of photos at

The point of the event is to illustrate that "solar" no
longer means "hippy hangout," "ugly box" or "Spartan
shack." The homes are gorgeous on the inside, and, usually,
on the outside. (Rules limit the house to 800 square feet,
not counting porches, patios, and gardens; that, and the
necessity to get them to Washington on trucks, dictated a
certain boxiness to some of the floor plans.)
There was nothing Spartan about these homes. In fact, the
name Decathlon is a reference to the ten categories that
these homes can rack up points in the contest:
architecture, engineering, market viability,
communications, comfort zone, appliances, hot water,
lighting, energy balance (bonus points if you generate more
power than you use), and "getting around."
These houses are completely "off the grid"--they're not
connected to the utility companies. Yet the teams have to
live like normal Americans. Using only power from the sun,
they have to keep the TV on six hours a day, run the
computer five hours a day, cook meals, wash dishes, do two
loads of laundry a week, take four 15-minute hot showers a
week, keep the temperature between 70 and 78 degrees,
maintain 40 to 60 percent humidity, and recharge an
electric two-seater car (that's the "getting around" part).
In short, they have to prove that living on solar power does
not involve sacrifice.
Far from it. Some of these houses had hot tubs, outdoor hot
showers, SubZero refrigerators, mood lighting and
full-blown home-entertainment systems.
Most houses incorporated reclaimed and recycled materials,
too. We saw furniture made from compressed fly ash from
coal-burning power plants; beams and plywood made of
bamboo, which grows four times as fast as hardwood;
flooring reclaimed from demolished buildings; and so on.
The University of Maryland team installed a wide,
bookcase-sized, indoor waterfall--not just to soothe the
soul, but to pull humidity out of the air. It was a
desiccant solution--like the "Do not eat" packets that come
in your electronics, but in liquid form--that absorbs
moisture. Drier air inside means that you don't need to run
the air conditioner as much. The saturated waterfall flows
out the bottom to an outdoor evaporator; the
re-concentrated solution is pumped back in to the
waterfall, and the cycle begins again.
All of the houses used arrays of glass tubes, resembling
black fluorescent lights, for hot water. They cook your
water as high as 220 degrees, which ought to be hot enough
for most people.
From Germany, the University of Darmstadt's amazing house
was a glass cube wrapped on all sides by what looked like
beautiful wooden shutters. But in fact, these were louvers
covered with solar panels--computer-controlled to track the
sun's arc.
The Germans' house was filled with cool energy touches--like
the oven whose floor descends from the bottom to present
your food, lowering like an elevator. The rising heat stays
in the oven, rather than pouring into the kitchen as it
does when you open a traditional oven door.
The sheetrock of this home's walls was infused with paraffin
(candle wax). Why? To absorb heat and liquefy during the
day, and then release the heat and re-solidify at night.
On the weekends, the lines to get into this house were an
hour long.
Maybe it's no surprise; Germany is really into solar power.
By German law, if you have solar panels, the power company
must buy any excess electricity you generate. As a result,
families routinely pocket a handy $100 or $150 a month--from
the local utility. There's a gold rush for roof space, and
solar technology is a red-hot market. It's brilliant.
In this country, however--well, not so much. Richard King,
the Decathlon director, told me that utilities don't pay
you for excess electricity. You can have a $0 electric
bill, but you can't make money.
In fact, although individual states (notably California)
have some promising solar incentives, the United States has
practically no national solar policy at all. There's only
one solar-installation tax-incentive program--according to

you can deduct up to 30 percent of the cost of solar
panels, maximum $2,000--and it expires at the end of next
year.
No wonder, then, that I encountered a certain amount of
cynicism, even among some of the participants and staff,
about the Department of Energy's motives in mounting the
Solar Decathlon. ("It's a PR stunt," muttered one when the
camera wasn't rolling.)
But you know what? It doesn't matter. The Solar Decathlon
has grown up to become exactly what it's supposed to be: an
amazing, inspiring, head-turning show, where the public can
see just how far solar has come. I wish you could have seen
it.
